Shooting

A man was shot and injured southeast of Bemidji last Friday, and an 18-year-old suspect is now in custody, the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office said. Deputies responded to the 1200 block of Little Norway Ave. SE at approximately 2:27 p.m. on May 15 after the Beltrami County Emergency Communications Center received a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, deputies located an adult male who had been shot. Emergency personnel treated the victim at the scene before he was transported by ambulance to Sanford Bemidji Medical Center. He was later transferred to Sanford Medical Center in Fargo. As of Sunday, May 17, the victim was listed in stable condition. His name has not been released. Following an extensive investigation, authorities identified the suspect as Ray Gene Jacob Tahahawah, 18. Investigators located the suspect’s vehicle within the Red Lake Nation, where Red Lake Law Enforcement took Tahahawah into custody. Charges are pending through the Beltrami County Attorney’s Office. The Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Bemidji Police Department, Paul Bunyan Task Force, Headwaters Safe Trails Task Force, Red Lake Department of Public Safety, Minnesota State Patrol, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Bemidji Ambulance Service. The investigation is ongoing. No further information is available at this time.
