A Staples man is facing four felony charges after police say he stole a trailer belonging to the American Legion that was packed with approximately $30,000 worth of Honor Flight North Dakota merchandise, and then burned the contents at his property. 74 year old Robert Andert, of Staples, was charged Monday in Clay County District Court with three counts of felony theft and one count of first-degree felony damage to property. He is being held in custody pending further proceedings.The trailer was stolen from the American Legion in Moorhead in the early morning hours of August 3. The trailer contained approximately 60 to 70 storage totes filled with merchandise belonging to Honor Flight North Dakota, including T-shirts, tumblers, folding tables, and carts valued at approximately $30,000. The trailer itself was estimated to be worth $7,500. According to a criminal complaint filed Monday, surveillance video captured a red Chevrolet pickup truck pulling alongside the trailer at approximately 2:45 a.m. on August 3. A person was seen exiting the truck before it drove off with the trailer attached. Investigators were able to identify the vehicle and trace it to Andert. A search warrant was executed at Andert’s property in Staples on August 7. Investigators found a burn pile on the property containing evidence that the Honor Flight merchandise had been burned. Andert’s wife told investigators he had arrived with a white trailer he claimed to have purchased online earlier in the week. When detectives contacted Andert, he admitted to having the trailer and agreed to return it. He also admitted to burning the merchandise inside it. Honor Flight North Dakota is a nonprofit that takes veterans to Washington, D.C., to visit war memorials at no cost to the veterans, funded through donations and fundraising.
