Fergus Falls Man Facing Sex Charges

A Fergus Falls man is facing multiple charges after allegedly having a sexual relationship with a victim less than 16 years old. This investigation began on June 12, according to court documents, when an Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Deputy responded to a call involving a potential suicide attempt by a juvenile. An emergency provider indicated that the juvenile mentioned something about having sex with an adult that was known by the victim. There was concern that this contributed to the victim’s distress. The juvenile told police that a relative had found messages between the victim and 29-year-old Jacob Watterud believed to be about a sexual relationship between the two. Court documents say that Watterud met with investigators on June 12, saying that his goal was for everyone to “get the help they need.” Watterud said that he should have previously gotten the help he needed stemming from a divorce and openly admitted to police that he and the victim liked each other. Investigators then met with the girl, who claimed Watterud told her a while ago that he liked her, but that she couldn’t tell anybody. Court documents continue to say that the relationship progressed to the two texting all the time, with Watterud talking to her sexually, asking if she was a virgin or on birth control. She also acknowledged the exchange of photographs, especially “nudes”. The victim said that she was unsure of how many times the two had had sex, but estimated around five times. Watterud is being charged with criminal sexual conduct in the first degree and electronic solicitation of a child.
