A 43-year-old man died Tuesday, September 1 in an apparent drowning on Ely Lake in Fayal Township, about five miles south of Eveleth. St. Louis County Sheriff’s deputies and Eveleth police were called around 7:10 p.m. to a report of a possible drowning. When responders arrived, they learned the man from Fayal Township had been paddleboarding with his juvenile daughter when he fell into the water and became unresponsive. Officials said the girl was able to pull her father part of the way to shore, where lake residents helped get him out of the water and started CPR. According to officials, neither the man nor his daughter were wearing a life jacket at the time. Despite life-saving efforts by family members, neighbors and emergency crews, the man was pronounced dead at the scene. His name is being withheld pending notification of family. The death remains under investigation by the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office.
