Baby Food Recall

A California-based food company is recalling a popular fruit puree sold in North Dakota and Minnesota after federal testing found elevated levels of a harmful substance that can cause health problems with long-term exposure. Initiative Foods announced Friday it is pulling one lot of “Tippy Toes” brand Apple Pear Banana fruit puree from stores nationwide due to elevated patulin levels. The product was distributed to retail grocery stores across North Dakota, Minnesota, and all other states except Alaska. Patulin is a naturally occurring mycotoxin produced by molds that can grow in fruits, particularly apples. Long-term exposure from ingesting patulin can lead to immune suppression, nerve damage, headaches, fever, and nausea, according to the Food and Drug Administration.
